Distinctive wall art can be a fantastic way to infuse personality into your home and fill a large, empty wall. However, original art pieces often come with a hefty price tag, with even reproduction prints costing significantly from some sellers. This is particularly true for three-dimensional art and beautifully textured wall décor. A TikTok DIY enthusiast showcases a method to craft cool, textured wall art using an unexpected item available affordably at Dollar Tree stores. By using several packs of plain plastic straws, glue, and paint, you can create unique custom wall hangings of any size to stylishly adorn your home for just a few dollars.
Dollar Tree’s Multicolored Plastic Straws are available in packs of 150, making it simple to grab a few packs for art projects instead of drinks. This endeavor is also an excellent opportunity to upcycle used straws from your home after cleaning them. Though this DIY uses plastic straws, paper straws, wooden dowels, or skewers would work just as well.

Over the weekend I made this DIY project using Dollar tree straws. I used four packs of straws, I cut the tips off, then I glued them together in different sets. I glued them in a staggered uneven design. I also cut some in half. I made a wall decor. To make the decor a little larger, I started by leaving gaps in the center of the design. I used hot glue for the entire project. I used rustoleum flat black spray paint on the front and back of my wall decor. I added a picture frame hook to mount my design on the wall. To craft unique art from straws, start by grouping them in flat bundles of 5-10 and securing them with an adhesive like white glue or Mod Podge, which is perfect for this project. Once you have various segments in different sizes, cut them to your desired length. Arrange a layer of them in a zigzag pattern to create a base for subsequent layers. Layer upwards, weaving and positioning pieces puzzle-style until it resembles a woven basket.
Finish by painting the entire piece in your preferred color (the DIYer opts for black for a modern look, but you could also choose distressed white or a faux wood finish for a rustic or natural vibe). Another fun option is covering your straws in decorative paper to add extra color and patterns. To hang your completed wall art, attach some wire, command strips, or small hanging hardware to the back. Alternatively, use a wood frame as the outer boundary for a more structured appearance.
This project can be customized in various ways concerning shape, dimension, and orientation, making it ideal for all types of open wall spaces. You can create an elaborately layered basket weave, as shown in the video, or a simple zigzag pattern. Alternatively, after cutting the straws into varying lengths, arrange them around a mirror or clock face to create a retro starburst pattern. They also serve as excellent additions to DIY wall sconces, creating a semi-transparent fluted look.
