Washing a Fleece Blanket by Hand: A Step-by-Step Guide

Snuggling under a soft fleece blanket is a perfect way to stay comfortable. The fabric is soft, cozy, breathable, and lightweight, making it ideal for throw blankets. Additionally, fleece is resistant to wrinkles and requires minimal care, aside from occasional washing. However, improper washing can ruin its plush texture, leaving the blanket feeling rough. Handwashing fleece blankets allows you to control the washing conditions better. To clean your blanket, you’ll need a large tub, cold water, and a small amount of detergent.

Fleece is composed of polyester and other synthetic materials that are heat-sensitive. High heat settings during washing and drying can damage the texture of the blanket. Water temperature can impact the fibers, with hot water potentially melting or altering them. Aggressive wash cycles may result in a rough surface, as the friction can cause fibers to knot or break. Excessive heat might also cause the edges to curl if the threads and base shrink unevenly. To prevent these issues, consider hand-washing your fleece blankets.

Some blankets, like those made from silk or mink, require hand-washing. While fleece blankets are generally machine washable, it’s important to check the label for specific washing instructions. Hand-washing is a good option if the blanket is too large for your washer, if you lack access to a washing machine, or if you want to protect the blanket from potential damage.

Hand-washing a fleece blanket to maintain its softness

To hand-wash a fleece blanket, start by filling a large container with cold water, ensuring there’s enough space to submerge the blanket fully. A bathtub works well for larger blankets. Add a few drops of mild detergent, taking care not to use too much, as excess soap can leave a residue that affects texture and softness. Swirl the detergent to ensure it dissolves before introducing the blanket.

Place the blanket in the water, ensuring it is fully submerged. Gently agitate the blanket to help remove dirt and buildup. Swishing it through the water aids in cleaning, while gently kneading each section ensures thorough washing. Allow the soapy water to drain from the blanket as you empty the tub, and press on the folded blanket to remove excess water. Refill the tub with clean water to rinse the fabric, repeating as needed to remove all soap.

Removing excess water will speed up drying. Avoid wringing the fabric to prevent stretching or damage. Instead, fold the blanket and press it to expel water. Place it between two thick towels and press further to remove additional water, or roll the blanket in a towel. Let the blanket air dry, and soon you’ll be able to enjoy its cozy comfort once more.
