Preparing Your Home: The Ultimate Moving Checklist

Moving can be a daunting task, whether you’re relocating locally or across the country. To help make the process smoother, we’ve put together an essential checklist to prepare you for your move.

Starting to declutter your belongings about eight weeks before your move date can help streamline the process. Consider donating items in good condition to local shelters or foster care facilities.

Deciding whether to hire professional movers or move yourself is a significant decision to make about four weeks before your move. Professional movers can cost around $1,700 on average, while renting a moving container can be a more cost-effective option.

Transferring utilities should be done about two weeks ahead of your move. Research utility companies in your new area and schedule disconnection at your current home and connection at your new home with a two-week buffer.

Purchase moving supplies like boxes, bubble wrap, tape, markers, and mattress bags four to six weeks before your move. Look for free boxes on platforms like Facebook Marketplace if you’re trying to save money.

Organize and label boxes by room to keep things organized during the move. Color-coding boxes or writing your name on them can help ensure they end up in the right place in your new home.

Before you move out of a rental, make any necessary repairs to ensure you get your security deposit back. Schedule a walk-through with your landlord about a week before you leave to address any outstanding issues.

Make arrangements for pets and kids to minimize the stress of moving for them. Consider having a loved one watch them during the move or take them on practice drives before the actual moving day.

Protect large appliances and furniture by using dollies with rubber wheels and covering furniture legs with blankets or bubble wrap. Measure your items and doorways to ensure they can pass through without causing damage to your home.

Clean your old home before moving out and your new home before moving in. Start cleaning from top to bottom to avoid spreading dirt and dust. Consider hiring a cleaning service specializing in move-out/move-in cleans if cleaning seems overwhelming.

Be prepared to clean (before and after your move)
