Plant Eucomis Bulbs at the Best Time for Beautiful Summer Blooms

For those looking to add a touch of the tropics to their garden this summer, consider Eucomis, also known as pineapple lilies. These unique plants originate from South Africa and are grown from bulbs, similar to spring flowers like daffodils. With thick, strap-like leaves in various shades of green and purple, Eucomis plants produce flower spikes in the summer that can grow up to 3 feet tall. These spikes bear small star-shaped blooms in white, pink, or purple hues, creating stunning summer displays. The best time to plant Eucomis bulbs is in spring, after the last frost, and they pair well with other popular summer bulbs like Asiatic lilies and bearded irises.

Gardeners in USDA zones 7 through 10 can grow Eucomis plants year-round, while those in colder climates will need to lift and store the dormant bulbs indoors during winter. With only 13 species in the genus, there are numerous cultivars and hybrids to choose from. Eucomis plants can provide shade for other sun-sensitive plants due to their tall growth.

When and how to plant Eucomis bulbs

The ideal time to plant Eucomis bulbs is in spring, once the threat of frost has passed, and soil temperatures are at least 65 degrees Fahrenheit. While they can thrive in full sun, providing afternoon shade in hotter regions is beneficial. Plant the bulbs 3 to 6 inches deep in well-drained, organic-rich soil, and mulch to retain moisture. In zone 7, overwintering the bulbs in the ground with a thick layer of mulch is possible.

Growing Eucomis species offers many benefits, from attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies to being deer and rabbit-resistant. The cut flowers can last over three weeks in a vase, making them a lovely addition to any garden. They can be grown in pots for a beautiful summer display, requiring division and repotting every few years. For a continuous tropical feel, consider cold-tolerant tropical plants to keep your garden vibrant year-round.
