For many renters, the challenge of ensuring “renter-friendly” decor hacks don’t cause damage is all too familiar. Concerns about peel-and-stick tiles that refuse to come off or removable wallpaper that seems permanently glued to the wall can be daunting. Fortunately, you no longer have to choose between personalizing your space and risking your security deposit. Using a few acrylic plastic sheets, you can apply peel-and-stick tiles without the worry of damage.
If you’re seeking renter-friendly DIY projects that won’t endanger your deposit, this hack is ideal. By attaching peel-and-stick tiles to acrylic plastic sheets (often referred to as plexiglass), you can effortlessly introduce style and charm to your rental without damaging the walls. Gather plexiglass sheets like these Art3d PET/Plexiglass Sheets, your favorite peel-and-stick tiles (such as Smart Tiles Peel and Stick Backsplash), some painter’s tape, a level, and nails (or Command Strips) to secure the final design in your space.

You can find all the materials… linked in my amazon storefront. I’ve also linked it in my story and DIY highlight to make it easy to find ☺️ This wall has been driving me crazy for the past few months. It just felt so blah no matter what way I arranged it in my #tinykitchen but now it feels so much more vibrant and me! #renterfriendly #apartmenttherapy #diyhomedecor #renterfriendlyupgrades

While there’s a straightforward trick to make any wallpaper renter-friendly and easy to remove (hint: use double-sided tape to attach wallpaper to painter’s tape), there’s a simpler solution. Just cut the acrylic plastic sheets to the desired size and affix the peel-and-stick tiles. If your rental agreement permits wall holes, use nails to mount the sheets. A level will help align the sheets properly while nailing them in.
If wall holes aren’t an option, Command Strips are a great alternative, securing the tile sheets without damaging the drywall or paint. Check the weight capacity of the Command Strips first. Attach the strips to the back of the sheets before placing them on the wall. To remove Command Strips with minimal impact, pull the tab gently. While double-sided tape is an alternative, it may damage the paint upon removal, so it’s not recommended.
An added benefit of this approach is its versatility; it works well with peel-and-stick wallpaper too. With a wide range of wallpaper designs, from shiplap to geometric patterns, you can find the perfect match for your home’s style. Create multiple panels with different patterns for easy seasonal updates. Command Strips will be invaluable here, though Velcro options may cause panels to protrude slightly, so experiment to find the best look.
