Effortlessly eliminate algae from your home’s siding using just two everyday household items

When it comes to cleaning the outside of your house, removing algae from your vinyl siding is crucial. You don’t need a power washer for this task – just a simple solution made from bleach and water. Diluted properly, bleach can effectively get rid of algae without causing damage to your siding. A quick scrub with this solution can make your vinyl siding look brand new again.

Algae on your vinyl siding is not only unsightly, but it can also cause damage in the long run. Stains left by algae can be difficult to remove, especially on painted siding. The moisture trapped by algae can lead to cracks, chips, and other paint damage. Additionally, algae can attract dirt and dust, further deteriorating the paint. To prevent these issues, using bleach to remove algae is a simple and effective solution.

Using bleach and water to remove algae on siding

To safely use bleach on your vinyl siding, it’s important to dilute it properly. Mix one part bleach with 10 parts water and wear protective goggles when handling the mixture. It’s best to mix the solution outside due to the fumes produced by bleach. You can apply the bleach solution using a spray bottle for targeted cleaning. Before applying the solution to the entire siding, do a patch test to ensure it won’t damage the vinyl. After letting it sit for a few minutes, rinse it off with a garden hose. Depending on your location and weather conditions, you may need to reapply the bleach solution every nine months to a year.

While any bleach can be used, oxygen bleach is a gentler alternative that is also environmentally friendly. This type of bleach is suitable for those with plants near their siding, as it minimizes potential damage. However, it’s still important to protect your plants from the bleach solution, even when diluted.
