The Classic Design Element to Make Your Small Bathroom Appear More Spacious

Even if your bathroom is compact, it can still make a significant visual statement. To enhance the appearance of your bathroom, consider focusing on the ceiling. Effective bathroom design involves attention to every detail. Crown molding not only provides a refined appearance but also creates the illusion of an elongated space. A great way to expand a small bathroom’s feel is by adjusting the spatial proportions and establishing a seamless transition between the wall and ceiling. If your bathroom already features architectural elements like casings or ceiling designs, crown molding can accentuate these features.

While some designers reserve crown molding for larger spaces such as master bedrooms and living rooms, adding decorative trim in a smaller area can be quite impactful. The size of your crown molding should correlate with your ceiling height. For an eight-foot ceiling, consider crown molding between two and a half to six inches wide. For ceilings exceeding ten feet, opt for molding between four and twenty-four inches. If your bathroom walls are tiled, you can still apply crown molding by priming its back and using a strong adhesive. Remember to seal all gaps with waterproof caulk.

How to choose the right crown molding for your bathroom

Installing crown molding in a bathroom requires some specific considerations. Before you begin, ensure you choose the appropriate material. Due to the bathroom’s high humidity, the wood should be treated with a waterproof finish, or you might opt for an alternative material. Failing to do so can lead to warping, mold, and mildew. Lowe’s offers PVC-based, moisture-resistant crown molding as an option. If you prefer wood, be sure to understand the process of waterproofing it. Avoid medium-density fiberboard, as it is susceptible to moisture damage.

In addition to material, various crown molding styles can complement your aesthetic preferences. For a classic touch, white crown molding is always a solid choice. To make it stand out, consider contrasting colors for your walls or ceiling. For a more understated effect, painting the entire room in the same shade of white works well. Design choices range from ornate Victorian crown molding to traditional craftsman style or simpler options. Cove molding, with its concave shape, can also help create the perception of a larger space.
