How to Use a Common Kitchen Pantry Item to Organize Your Mugs

Mugs can present a storage challenge due to their bulky shape and the ease of accumulating a large collection over time. Some opt for creative display solutions, such as hanging them under a kitchen shelf with hooks or building a wall-mounted mug rack. While these are excellent storage ideas, not everyone has the space or desire to display mugs outside the cabinets. For those who prefer to keep their mugs neatly stored away, a tiered spice rack inside a cabinet can be a fantastic solution.

Using tiered spice pantry organizers makes organizing and decluttering your mugs a breeze. Simply place one inside a kitchen cabinet and arrange the mugs on the shelves. To optimize space, position them with handles facing outward or to the sides. This arrangement also simplifies selecting your favorite cup for morning coffee or tea time.

A tiered spice rack is a great alternative to stacking mugs in your kitchen cabinet, helping you make the most of every inch of storage space. It results in a tidier, more organized look and eliminates the need to unstack mugs to reach those at the back. Stacking can also lead to chips and other mishaps, which you’d prefer to avoid with your favorite mug!

However, this method isn’t flawless. Accessing mugs at the back might still require unstacking a few from the lower shelves. One solution is to place fewer mugs on each tier, allowing for easy sliding to reach those at the back. If your cabinet shelving is adjustable, you can raise the shelf above to reach in from above. Keep in mind that some store-bought spice racks may not have shelves wide enough for mugs, as they are typically designed for smaller spice bottles. Fortunately, there are spice racks available with wider shelves, such as the HOMCENES Wood Three-Tiered Display Shelf, which features 3.15-inch deep shelves, providing more room for mugs than smaller options.

Alternative to Purchasing a Tiered Spice Rack for Your Coffee Mugs

If you’re interested in using a tiered spice rack for your mugs but can’t find one large enough, consider a DIY approach. It’s a simple project that requires no tools beyond a measuring tape. First, measure the width of your cabinet. Then, purchase six 2-inch by 4-inch pieces of wood and have them cut to the width of your cabinet shelf. Stack three pieces at the back of the cabinet for the highest tier, two in front for the middle tier, and place the last piece at the front for the shortest tier. To personalize, apply a coat of paint to match your cabinets before assembling.

You don’t have to limit yourself to three tiers with this DIY. If your cabinet is larger, add more tiers for extra storage, or use only two tiers if you have a smaller shelf. Alternatively, you can modify the DIY by using five 2-by-4s for the back tier, three for the middle, and one for the lowest tier to create a more pronounced height difference, making it easier to access mugs at the back.
