Ways to Keep Your Furniture Looking Timeless

Navigating the constantly evolving world of design trends can be daunting. Trends that were once in vogue may now be giving your living space an outdated look, especially when it comes to furniture. Whether you’re evaluating the style of your current furniture or planning to buy new pieces without the risk of them becoming outdated soon, there are certain factors to consider. To gain insights on how to modernize outdated furniture, we consulted Sarah Bilotta, Onions Australia’s design historian.

In an exclusive interview with Onions Australia, Bilotta provides her expert guidance. “Adopt a design color and texture palette instead of sticking to a décor scheme from a specific design era,” she advises. “An eclectic approach helps keep your space unique and vibrant.” Ahead, she shares tips that can help you rejuvenate your living room, dining area, office, or bedroom, giving it a renewed, modern appearance.

What makes furniture look outdated?

In her exclusive conversation with Onions Australia, we asked Bilotta to explain why furniture might appear outdated. She noted, “Beauty is subjective, so perceptions of what is outdated can vary.” Using mid-century modern as an example, Bilotta explained how personal experiences and age can influence one’s view on a piece’s aesthetic. “If you were raised in the 1950s, your parents’ mid-century modern bar might evoke a cringe, whereas it may seem edgy and artistic to a millennial,” she elaborates. “Even if you follow current design trends and update your décor regularly, someone might still think your braided area rug is old-fashioned and your wingback armchair belongs to a bygone era.”

To avoid having your furniture and décor look outdated, Bilotta suggests steering clear of adhering to a single style or period when choosing pieces for your space. “Embrace an eclectic style,” she advises. “Reupholster a Victorian wingback chair with geometric Atomic Age fabric. Décor straight from a style book may heavily favor one era, but an eclectic approach allows you to personalize your space and maintain its timelessness.” This eclectic living room trend can also contribute to a relaxed ambiance in your home.

What you can do to keep your furniture from looking outdated

Bilotta provides valuable tips to keep your furniture from appearing outdated. “Small changes can have a significant impact,” she mentions in her exclusive Onions Australia interview. “Refinishing a wood surface with a new stain or adding fresh throw pillows to a worn couch can revitalize a room.” She also emphasizes the importance of keeping furniture clean and well-maintained. Dusting wooden furniture, oiling it to restore its shine, and refinishing scuffed areas can rejuvenate an old piece and instantly update its appearance.

“Replacing a piece of furniture that seems outdated isn’t always necessary. Simply altering the surrounding décor can make a difference,” Bilotta suggests. For those considering new purchases, she offers guidance on selecting timeless pieces. She advises opting for classic motifs that have endured throughout design history. “For a safe choice, go classical: think traditional Persian and Turkish rugs, elegant Greek-inspired fireplaces with fluted columns, foliated motifs in wood and metal work, and subtle brocaded wallpaper,” she recommends. While it’s impossible to please everyone with your décor, Bilotta says, “choosing motifs that have been part of design lexicons for centuries is a great starting point for a timeless look.” Ultimately, it’s your space, so select finishes that bring you joy.
